Cycle 2 applications are closed for the Cohort of 2025.

Application Requirements:

  • Complete the GEARE application

  • Academic Transcript

  • Resume

  • Application Essay

 

There are two main Application cycles for the program:

  • Cycle 1

    • Open for 2nd Semester First-Year Engineering students

    • Open from 1st February – 28th February

    • Will be notified about program acceptance during the first week of April

  • Cycle 2

    • Open for 1st Semester Sophomore Engineering students

    • Open from 1st September – 30th September

    • Will be notified about program acceptance prior to November 1st

To apply to the GEARE program, please visit X Engine and select Purdue student log in when prompted. Enter your Purdue credentials and once signed in, click on the profile icon at the top right of the page to access the dropdown menu. Select Surveys in the dropdown menu and scroll down until the GEARE application should be there! Visit the video for more information!

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

At All Times

  • Student in the College of Engineering or Department of Computer Science

  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA

Prior to Departure

  • 12 credits of foreign language or demonstrate equivalent proficiency

  • Complete one domestic internship

  • Orientation seminar ENGR 296 and ENGR 297

 

While Abroad

  • International internship or research experience (minimum 10-12 weeks)

  • One semester of study abroad

  • Orientation Seminar ENGR 397

 

Upon Return

  • Orientation seminar ENGR 497

  • Present study abroad & work experience at GEARE Poster Symposium to underclassmen

  • Global Design Team Project

COSTS

  • For most study abroads, students pay standard Purdue tuition as if they were on on-campus.

  • $800 is required to be part of the GEARE program.

  • GEARE is a cost neutral program when considering scholarships and internship salaries.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Students are strongly encouraged to apply for grants/scholarships wherever they can. Below are grants currently available​.

Global Living Assistance

  • A grant offered by the Office of Professional Practice, which offsets the cost of living in a foreign country.​ ​ Here is the link to the Global Living Assistance Application.

Purdue MOVES Scholarship 

  • Scholarship offered by the Purdue Study Abroad Office, to fund your activities during your study abroad/global internship.

​

SAIL

  • Scholarship through the Office of the Dean of International Programs that allows you to fund your activities during study abroad while completing an intercultural learning course.
